Programs for Boy Scouts

Cub Scouts
2-hour Class
Cub Scout programs fulfill most badge or pin requirements.

Scheduling
A four-week notice is required. Saturday and Sunday classes available; a minimum of 15 participants required.

Fee
$10 per participant. One adult for every five Scouts admitted free; additional adults pay scout cost.

Native Americans
Learn about American Indians and compare the various cultures illustrated in the museum’s exhibitions. Explore traditions by making a musical instrument, and discover how Native Americans communicate through symbolic writing and storytelling.

All About Birds
Discover the wonderful world of birds by exploring the variety of birds the museum has in its collection. Learn about threatened, endangered, and even extinct species. Find out what you can do to create your own bird habitat, starting by making your own birdfeeder.

Garbology
Garbage is everywhere! Learn about the various ways garbage can impact our natural world. Discover ways we can reduce, reuse, recycle waste, and conserve energy sources to help save our planet! Learn about composting with a hands-on activity and even turn garbage into art.

Webelos programs satisfy most badge requirements.

All About Geology
Explore how rocks and minerals form, and how we use them in our daily lives. Learn identification with hands-on activities. Discover how geologists recreate ancient environments through the fossil record, and explore Earth forces such as earthquakes and volcanoes. You’ll even start your own collection!

Forester
Plants and trees have many uses in our daily lives, as well as being food and homes for many animal species. Take a museum tour through Pennsylvania hardwood forests, the African rainforest, and the American northwest coast coniferous forest to compare and identify the trees and plants common to these areas. Scouts create a poster illustrating tree growth rings, discuss the pros and cons of forest fires, and much more!

Pennsylvania Naturalist
Through hands-on activities, scouts learn what ecosystems are and the relationships of the plants and animals that call them home. Learn about plant and animal adaptations and how to identify poisonous species. Discuss how protecting ecosystems is not only beneficial for wildlife, but for us, as well.


Merit Badge
4 1/2-hour Workshop
Participants will satisfy most badge requirements.

Brownies
2-hour Try-It Class
Brownie programs fulfill most Try-It requirements. Try-It patches related to the class will be provided to leaders upon completion of the program.

Me and My Shadow
A shadow is not just something that follows you around; it can be amusing and useful. Have fun matching shadows with some of nature’s creatures, create your own shadow puppet, make a shadow box, and even learn to play a shadow game!

Eco-Explorer
Learn all about ecosystems and habitats while exploring museum exhibitions. Have fun with a hands-on food chain activity, discuss what you can do to help wildlife, and make your own birdfeeder.

Plants
What gives us oxygen, medicine, food, paper, and more?  Plants! Learn about plants with fun hands-on activities, and how to identify them with a scavenger hunt. You’ll even plant your own seeds to take home.

Watching Wildlife
Animals do some pretty amazing things such as change colors, build homes, and shop for food. Enjoy an up-close look at museum specimens and exhibitions to explore the fascinating ways wildlife has adapted to survive in its habitat.


Junior Girl Scouts
2-hour Program
Pick your date and time and satisfy most badge requirements. Badges will be provided to leaders upon completion of the program.

Jeweler
Scouts discover the jewelry and customs of other cultures, the origins and folklore of gems, and create their own work of art. A tour of the most spectacular specimens in Hillman Hall of Gems & Minerals and Wertz Gallery: Gems and Jewelry is the highlight!

Earth Connections
It is recommended that scouts have completed Requirement #1, “Be an Ecologist,” prior to their museum visit. Using museum exhibitions, scouts learn how to identify plants and trees in their ecosystems. Classroom activities include investigating tree rings, playing an eco-game, and much more!

Rocks Rock
Geology is not just about rocks, but earth forces such as earthquakes and volcanoes. Learn how geologists study the formation of our world, and how they recreate past ecosystems through the fossil record. Learn to identify minerals and Pennsylvania rocks with hands-on activities, and start your own rock collection.

Wildlife
Using museum specimens, learn how scientists organize our natural world through classification. Discover plant and animal adaptations, and what can be done to protect threatened and endangered species. Scouts create their own field journals, and learn to identify some of the species of Pennsylvania, including helpful and harmful plants.


Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts
4½-hour Workshop
Participants will satisfy most Interest Project requirements, and Interest Project awards will be provided upon completion of the program.
